Usual Suspects Pt II

The new imports to SoKo arrived last August, and from the lot, I've been privileged to adopt 4 new usual suspects. Since they have already and will still feature a lot on this blog, i thought it'd  be polite to introduce them all to you.

Exhibit A: Christine Wang

The one person I believe has real swag, came in the smallest and awesomest package ever. The Taiwanese-American princess does the I'm-an-ex-tom-boy thing with such ease and this is what makes her super cool. Christine is from Kansas City, Missouri (you have to say it with an American accent for effect) and she studied psychology which may explain why she's such a cool person to talk to- especially when you talk as much as I do. She know how to just listen, you know? Also, Christine knows everything about everything and this may be a bit scary when you're playing a game of 30 seconds or some other general knowledge game with her. Pressure! I just love how easy going and super fun she is. Here's my Wang-a-Tang and I.

Exhibit B: Charde Mills

Don't we just love making South African friends so far away from home?! This is lovely Charde who is (very) proud of her Durban town. She also listens to more music than any other not-my-colour person I know, and has the cutest laugh you've heard since you were little. So far, my favourite line by Charde is: "I can't stand those parties where everyone throws there hands up as 'Scotty Doesn't Know' starts playing". You would never guess that she'd be the type to rather be bumping Durban house music then rock jams. Never judge a book by its cover. Here she is- showing her inner African animal tamer ( I just had to!).

Exhibit C: Leianne (say lay ann) McKoy

Yep. The real McKoy, indeed. Leianne has been one of the confirmations of my Canadians-are-super-honest-and-super-cool theory. She studied Education at York Uni in Canada and actually has a real passion for what she does. Leianne is a real sweet heart who also has a no-nonsense side that I absolutely admire, and I'm sure makes her students (and people in general) never mistake her kindness for walk-overness. This I admire about her. She then also had be Jamaican, just so her ratings on the coolness scale could spike right up. She has an awesome voice, great sense of style, an obsession with cleanliness and a heart as big an African bottom. The gorgeous chocolate to the Charde, Jess n Lei tri, here's the beautiful Leianne McKoy.

Exhibit D: Jessica 'Jess' Bigelow

Bigelow. That's her real surname, yes. Cool, huh? Jess also hails from Canada, and now that you already know how I feel about Canadians, I don't think I need to add that she's the epitome of awesome. Jess just has this down to earth vibe about her that you wouldn't expect from a girl on her level of beauty. On the first day I met this lady, she was so open to share with us what I would think to be her biggest secret. That is: her pet peeve, or rather absolute hate for showering. This story I'll save for another post, but I think it's key that I mention this since it really has been the basis of this friendship; According to Jess, she would not have been as jolly a lady had we met on one of her 'clean' days. This lady has a big heart, humility I can't explain, and eyes that water for anything, whether it's happy or sad. She is just one unique soul you cannot help but love. Her's J-Biggy herself.

And now, I must give shine to a lady who has been in Korea for a year longer than I've been here and I didn't get to introduce the first Usual Suspects time around.

Exhibit E: Suzanne Van Der Merwe

Of course, that surname gave away where she's from. Suzanne is another South African princess I met at church the first Sunday I visited. I had no idea that the warm smile that greeted me then, would be one I'd be happy to keep seeing months later. Suzanne's just a bubble of joy and passion and infects us all with that magic. Her gentle spirit just draws you to her without you even noticing it. And, oh! Don't let her hug you when you're holding back any tears, coz they might just get triggered! Unfortunately, Suz is leaving Korea soon to go start doing what she's passionate about (teaching) despite being an accountant by virtue of degree. You have got to love a lady with a vision and a heart for young ones. She has obviously been in Korea long enough to have mastered the 'victory pose'- here's my friend and big sister, Suzanne.

How can I be anything but happy when this is the company I keep?!

Oh, and may I mention that it was fun stalking their Facebook profiles to find these pics?! No? Too late.

February Birthdays

My two lovely friends turn 24 and 25 all at once. I dunno if I've explained it before, but in a nutshell, Koreans use the Chinese calendar which means on the day you are born, you are 1 year old. Sooo, this means, that when we celebrate our birthdays in Korea, we get an extra year, for free. Sure, we love free, things, but not when it comes to age.

Happy 24/25th birthday to my two fwendies, Laurentia and Christine. Here are some pics of how we celebrated:

Chris and Miju
Chris showing us her REAL age. She wasn't buying any of that 25 stuff. Hehe
One of Lula's many birthday gatherings
How pretty were those cupcakes?!
On Sunday, we also celebrated Diana's birthday with a lovely Italian dinner. I believe this was Diana's first birthday away from home (Albania), so I hope what it should be- a happy day.

Muchos love to the 3 of you.

On the other side of the equator, these 4 good people also got older (without the privilege of an extra year, of course). Kim, Renei, Zanele and Lerato: happy belated birthday to you gals. I have nothing but love for you!

Phew! A pretty festive Feb indeed!

Dear God

Thank you that even my silly, material dreams never go unanswered. The wait was long, but I know twas worth it :)

Hitting the Slopes

And of course, I mean that literally.

Last weekend a few of us took a trip to a nearby ski resort for a day on the ice. There were 6 of us, with 3 of us (South Africans) amateurs in the skiing and snowboarding game, so the other 3 each took a student under their wing.

Like everywhere in Korea, the place was packed with people super kitted out in the fanciest and brightest snow gear. I mean, even waterproof headphones and jeans. Yes! Waterproof jeans. The type of gear that will make even a tiny little Korean girl look like a gangster, or at least like a gangster's wife. Just when I thought it was only us South Africans who were going over board with the colour blocking fad. Ha!

Rocking my lil grizzly bear hat, and my coach Suzanne on my arm, I did a mini practice, learn-the-basics run before getting on the real slopes. Up we went on the cable car lifty thingy and before I could even compose myself, I was on the ice. All you need to know from there is that I did a good job at applying what Suzanne taught me, but I did an even better job falling being humble and bonding with the snow.

Have you ever seen anyone looking this cool?! No. Don't lie- you haven't.

A Popeyes lunch break to replenish the energy
With Raquel and lovely Suzanne who was an amazing teacher :)
Grizzly loves world peace n mustard.
Colour blocking?
I had such a blast, even when I was flat on the snow from a heavy fall. What I didn't enjoy though, was the swollen ankles I woke up with the next morning. See:

With a bit of swelling and a lot of glow (thanks, cream) on the same evening.

and BAM! Grey elephant ankles and feet in the morning. So attractive.
But even that kankles weren't enough to put me off skiing. Thank you to Christine, Jess, Charde, Raquel and Suzanne for an awesome day doing exactly what we set out to: hitting the slopes. :)

In a Nutshell

I have been meaning to do this for a while, and with the encouragement of my friend, Phumi, I've decided to make like Nike and just do it.

Here it is, the first edition of my top 8 highs, lows, haha's and oh!s for the week.

(Miss represented by the skeleton and hits represented by the gorgeous lady in her hanbok). Pic sourced from here.

  • I finally got a camera! I heart the awesome feeling of quenching a toddler aged thirst so I'd like to thank God and my school for payday! Big hit.
  • Shopping for Laurentia's birthday prezzie was so much fun. I can't explain how much I love gift shopping. Hit.
  • A mature person is one who knows how to handle her finances well. I am at that awkward, adolescent stage- voice just breaking and all. A work in progress. The temporary financial immaturity is just a miss.
  • You always under-estimate the amount of work it takes to move your stuff from one apartment to another. Having a helping hand will certainly make it easier though (thanks, Lorna). Hit.
  • Being in a new space makes me feel like I have a clean slate. Here's to delayed new year's resolutions. Hit.
  • Pinterest, and Youtube, why are you so addictive?! Just when I thought I had my browser addiction under control. Bitter-sweet miss.
  • Spring is slowly peeping in. Yay! Hit.
  • Discovering new bands is such a hit. Realising that the same band came all the way from New Zealand to perform in Korea, just 4 months before you discovered them... Miss :(

The Warmest Welcome

A very excited Raquel and Keke (yes, that's a collective noun) boarded Korean Air, Hong Kong bound on December 30th. The flight was a lovely, comfortable 3 hours and went by quickly with the help of Memoirs of a Geisha (great movie!).

We were to get our first reverse culture shock as we boarded our South African Airways flight to OR Tambo International from Hong Kong. The uber politeness of service in Korea definitely spoiled us a little bit because I got the shock (and embarrassment) of my life when the SAA flight attendant was so rude to a passenger. "Excuse me! SIT DOWN! The seat belt light is on. SIT!" O_O

"Welcome home" was the under-tone of that scolding. I would have to forget about my customer-is-king mentality for a short while. Ha!

Fourteen uncomfortable hours later, we land in Johannesburg at 07:10. Oh, how tempted we were to kiss the ground as we got off the plane- but we controlled our inner African Americans.

The second "welcome home" was having to stand in a 20 minute queue for passport control before we could go and pick up our bags. By then, my excitement was dwindling (perhaps also coz I just couldn't believe I was finally back home).

Walking out (now about 07:45), sharing a 'OMW, we are here!', I look out the glass doors and spot one of my sisters. Before I could register what was going on, I just heard screaming and cheering, people jumping up and down, holding posters and flowers. FOR ME?!? (Look around. No Beyonce here). YES! For me. My heart melted, I forgot about the bags Raquel was pushing (sorry, Raquey!) and I just ran towards my Mommy who embraced me with tears and a bouquet of flowers.

In the haze of my teary eyes I look up and see all my sisters, my nephew, friends, their tears and more flowers and signs to welcome me back.

The Family entourage arrives
Loved the hilarious posters- especially mom's!
My sisters, Tlalane and Mpeo with the fake Makape smile
Little sis' tears came one hour before I saw her. Love you, Fifi!
There I go, leaving Raquel to push the trolley. hahaha (so sorry, Raqs!) *pic c/o Desire Ishwar via FB
Note how my nephew (Lebang) is NOT understanding why we are all crying. heeee *c/o Desire Ishwar via FB
Tshiamo and Njabulo pulled through from Pretoria :) *c/o Desire Ishwar via FB
And Des too, from 'Rustenburg'! *c/o Desire Ishwar via FB
My romantic friend, Tlale from Pretoria *c/o Tlale Matseke via Blackberry
Two weeks later, when I finally went to my home town *c/o Tshiamo Tlaletsi via Blackberry

I was so taken aback by the effort everyone made to made sure I got the welcome of a queen. I felt a strong sense of 'you didn't have to!' but I never uttered those words because I knew that they all wanted to be there. That's what made my heart smile. A great wake up reminding me of the angels I have been blessed with.

Raquel, thank you for being a lovely travel buddy, and for keeping your cool while I lost it for a while. You're my little voice of reason.

A special thank you so those who came through (Stiby, Tshi, Jay, Basi, Tlale, Des, Mommy, Mpeo, Lulu, Fifi, Bankie):

I love you guys, and I thank you- from the depths of my heart- for giving me the warmest welcome ever!
